My office has a hot-desking policy, with no assigned seating, which means regular workers can find themselves sitting next to executives on any given day. This is supposed to create a so-called “egalitarian” office culture, but that is a total myth. I happened to sit next to the VP I report to the other day, whose “leadership style” is very open and friendly— a seemingly nice guy. I casually mentioned to him the “crazy gas prices” (over 2$/litre in Quebec) and he replied “yeah there will have to be price increases for sure.” I responded by saying that “cost of living will definitely rise exponentially as a result of the War,” but it soon became clear cost of living was the last thing on his mind. It turned out he had just been in a meeting on raising the prices of the commodities we manufacture and he was thinking of an communication plan to advise our customer-base. No matter how egalitarian a culture capitalists try to create in a workspace, or how friendly your boss is, the reality is a boss is a boss is a boss.
